Google is finally rolling out the Pixel Watch’s long-awaited Health Guardian features, bringing blood pressure trends, insulin resistance trends, and sleep quality indicators to the Google Health app.
The new tools will begin rolling out to eligible users today, September 24, with monthly trend reports expected to arrive in October. They’re available for free on the Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Watch 5, while Fitbit Air users will eventually get access to them through a Google Health Premium subscription.
The features are designed to track changes in your health over time, rather than simply giving you another number to check. Google says they work behind the scenes, using physiological data collected over weeks to identify longer-term trends.
Insulin Resistance Trends analyzes weeks of physiological data to track changes in metabolic health without the need for a blood sample. Blood Pressure Trends uses pulse and movement patterns to estimate blood pressure trends without cuffs or manual calibration. Google recommends confirming any lasting changes with a home blood pressure monitor or healthcare professional.
There’s also a sleep breathing quality trend that gives you a daily picture of how much of your sleep you’ve spent with optimal breathing, and these measurements are incorporated into a monthly assessment.
These three features join the wider Health Guardian suite, which also includes respiratory emergency detection on the Pixel Watch 4 and 5 in select European countries. The opt-in feature can detect dangerously low blood oxygen levels and automatically call emergency services and 911 when the wearer is unresponsive.
According to Google, the features are backed by clinical validation. The insulin resistance model was trained on more than a trillion minutes of sensor data from five million logged-in users, checked for accuracy using standard clinical blood tests, and published in Nature. Your blood pressure system uses the WavesFM base model, which is based on billions of minutes of heart and movement data.
Google Health Coach is also built into the experience, helping users interpret information and guide them on lifestyle changes.
The company is positioning Health Guardian to detect changes earlier, rather than replacing medical tests or professional advice. However, for Pixel Watch owners, it adds a significantly more detailed health tracking layer to the smartwatch.
