Haven’t upgraded to iPhone 18 Pro or Duo? Here’s what’s coming next year

Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo have just started, and the iPhone 18 Pro has been on the market for about a month. Of course, the iPhone Duo is back-ordered until January, so whether you’re considering buying one of these phones or not, it makes it really easy to think about what’s coming next.

2027 will be a big iPhone launch year for Apple. First, the company will continue the line of iPhone 18 after presenting the launch schedule last month. Then, in the fall, the company will launch a new round of flagships in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the iPhone. This is what to expect.

Spring 2027

iPhone 18

For the first time, Apple will present its basic iPhone in the spring. Upgrades for the iPhone 18 are not clear, although more RAM is one of the main rumors. A thermal upgrade may also happen, as will the new Apple C2 modem.

It is possible that Apple will update the design in line with the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro, although we do not know yet.

This phone will definitely be equipped with the A20 chip, and it will probably start at the same $899 price that the iPhone 17 sits at – after it increased from $799 last month.

iPhone 18e

This phone will most likely end up with a chip from the A19 to the A20 chip, and launch in the spring alongside the iPhone 18. Earlier this year, reports indicated that Apple would share many components between the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, although it was unclear what that meant for the devices.

iPhone Air 2

Out of all the spring iPhone releases, this is the one to wait for. After receiving a warm reception with the initial iPhone Air, Apple went back to the drawing board and decided to modify the design to fit an ultrawide camera into the device. This means that the phone could not be released last month.

Personally, I don’t think the ultrawide camera is too important – although many people will see one camera on the back of the phone and immediately assume that it is less popular, so it could be a significant upgrade for sales. Also, ultrawide images can be fun at times.

While not confirmed, I would not be surprised if it integrates a smaller Dynamic island, similar to the iPhone 18 Pro. iPhone Air 2 may jump from Apples C1X modem to C2.

It should have a large battery, reportedly as large as 3500mAh. That’s about a 10% improvement from the original iPhone Air.

Fall 2027

iPhone 20 Pro

For the iPhone’s 20th anniversary, Apple is expected to launch a completely redesigned iPhone to celebrate. It will reportedly have more glass, significantly thinner bezels, and reduce the flat edge design of the iPhone 12 and later. It should also offer a smaller dynamic island, possibly with a punch-hole selfie camera and Face ID under the display.

Personally, I doubt that this will really replace the “Pro” phone for thermal reasons, but time will tell. The iPhone Duo seems to have strong heat while not having an aluminum unibody, so my concerns may not be relevant.

If you are holding off iPhone 18 Pro, this “iPhone 20” is the phone to wait for.

iPhone Duo 2

Finally, Apple will release the successor to the announced iPhone Duo next fall. There aren’t a lot of rumors for this phone, although one might hope that Face ID and a better camera are in the pipeline. Of course, you can expect the next generation of Apple Silicon with the A21 Pro chip next year.
