WhatsApp may soon let iPhone users open any link in the browser in the app

After introducing restrictions in the browser for certain business links last year, WhatsApp is working on expanding the feature to all links shared in the chat. Here are the details.

WhatsApp works in an alternative browser in the app

Last May, WBetaInfo WhatsApp has reportedly begun testing a feature that will allow “users to view HTTPS-secure business sites within the app,” with the option to open those links in their default browser via the three-dot menu.

Now, the site has reported that WhatsApp is working on extending this support to all chat links.

Although the feature is not yet available to beta testers, WBetaInfo Revealed a reference to it in the latest TestFlight build and shared screenshots showing how it works.

According to the website, a new “In-app browser” option under Settings > Chats will allow users to choose whether links open directly within WhatsApp or in their default browser.

The same settings screen also allows users to clear cookies, cache, and other browsing data stored by WhatsApp’s in-app browser.

This is it WBetaInfo:

Users will be able to enable the in-app browser from the app settings. Here, WhatsApp will add a new option called “In-app browser”. When users enable this feature, they will be able to open any links they send and receive on the chat screen. When a user activates this option for the first time, WhatsApp will show a sheet below that explains how it works. It informs users that they can open any link within WhatsApp instead of in the default browser. Users will be able to restore the default browser at any time.

The report notes that “WhatsApp can’t see which links are shared in conversations and which users open them.”

As is usually the case with references discovered in the TestFlight build of WhatsApp, there is currently no word on when the app plans to make the feature available to beta testers or the general public.
