TL; DR

  • OpenAI will reopen new subscriptions to its $200 ChatGPT Pro plan on September 30 after suspending it earlier this month.
  • The refund plan offers about half of the previous API dollar allowance, though OpenAI says lower-cost models and the removal of the five-hour cap should make up for it.
  • Additionally, an unannounced $500/month ChatGPT Pro Max tier appeared, promising “Fastest Performance and Code” as a key benefit.

For about three weeks, anyone who wanted ChatGPT’s most expensive personal plan had to wait on the sidelines. OpenAI stopped new signups for its $200 Pro tier on September 10th unprecedented demand GPT-6 leaves the $100 Pro option for the Astra as the highest plan newcomers can buy. This wait is almost over, but the $200 refund plan seems to have disappeared.

Thibault “Thibault” Sottiaus of OpenAI says New subscriptions to the $200 Pro plan will reopen on September 30. The price remains the same, but OpenAI is changing the way it calculates usage. Sottiau says the new allowance is about half the “API costs” of the previous $200 plan.

While this may seem like a straightforward descent, OpenAI says the picture is more complex. The company recently lowered API prices with the GPT-6 Sol and Luna, meaning every dollar can stretch further as the models become cheaper. Sottiaux also says that OpenAI won’t reset the five-hour usage window at the $200 level, allowing subscribers to pay the weekly allowance as needed. Other non-redemption subscription bonuses will also be announced soon.

The reopening should answer the frustrated users who have been asking for the last couple of weeks when the level will be back. But a more expensive option may appear soon. Testing directory spotted the ChatGPT Pro Max tier not announced in the subscription interface, priced at $500 per month before taxes. One version is listed at $600 including VAT.

So far, its main promises are “Fastest Performance and Codex”, along with maximum memory, 100GB file storage, access to OpenAI’s most capable models, and early access to new features. Testing directory Cerebras suggests that infrastructure could provide this speed boost, but this connection has not been confirmed.

For now, the Pro Max remains in limbo, with no confirmed launch date or usage restrictions. But with the relaunch of the $200 plan and more subscription announcements expected at OpenAI DevDay on September 29, I think its timing is right.
