This ESP32 CYD project turns your display into a Flock camera scanner

Resume

  • SquachWatch turns your ESP32 CYD into a standalone WiFi/Bluetooth scanner for trackers.

  • Flock cameras, body cameras, recording glasses, AirTags, drones, skimmers and more. determines.

  • Runs standalone via USB, listens frequently on 2.4 GHz, and shares alerts via SquachMesh signals.

With the proliferation of Flock cameras and goggles that can record people, it’s been scary for the privacy-conscious to walk with confidence. Luckily, there are projects out there that help you scan and detect when something is stalking you, and SquachWatch is one of the cutest projects out there.

SquachWatch monitors anything that might be spying on you

It can only detect so much from Flock cameras

As revealed by our sister site MakeUseOfThe SquachWatch ESP32 turns an inexpensive yellow display (CYD) into a small scanner. It monitors the perimeter and lets you know when it detects anything that might threaten your privacy. It does this while using some really cute Sasquatch-based mascots that talk to you and do little animations, which is always a plus.

Its creator describes it as:

SquachWatch-CYD sniffs WiFi and Bluetooth for known wireless signatures of Flock Safety cameras, Axon body cameras, recording glasses, card skimmers, AirTags, drones, proximity beacons and pentest equipment. On a 2.8-inch CYD drive, it listens at 2.4 GHz and runs standalone on a bare board — no PC, no peripherals, just plug it into a USB port.

There’s even a cool feature called “SquachMesh” that lets SquachWatch users send messages, alerts, and update notifications. If any of the connected boards detect a device you don’t want to see, they’ll alert you with this feature. Everything is sent as a signal rather than a connection, meaning you don’t need to connect directly to other boards to receive their updates.

If you want to read more, go to the site SquachWatch GitHub page or flashes on the board website. You can also try online demo and provide example data to see how it works.
