Google’s latest update to the Gemini app for macOS includes native iMessage integration. This follows the app that entered Windows last week.
Gemini’s latest connected app on Mac is @messages to “read, search and send messages in Apple Messages.” Specifically, links can:
- Send a message to a contact or phone number
- Read past conversations, unread messages, and search message history
This helps with context by being able to find information from conversations. Examples of warnings include:
- Text John: “Running 5 minutes late!”
- Show me my latest message from Sarah
- Find a message for dinner reservations
In terms of limitations, Gemini cannot:
- Manage group membership or change group chat photos
- Schedule messages for future delivery or edit sent messages
- Send files, images, or media attachments (plain text only)
- Send tapback reactions (love, like, dislike, laugh, highlight, question)
- Create a photo or image within an automated workflow
This link appears in Settings > App Links at the bottom after updating to version 1.116.5.889 of Gemini for macOS. However, as of this afternoon, the server-side component appears to be missing, with @messages not yet recognized in the alert box.
The latest update to Gemini for macOS introduced a file provider extension that shows “Add to Gemini” when you right-click on a file in the Finder. This will immediately add the photo or document to the alert box. It can be enabled in Settings > Extensions. Google also added images, videos, and daily snippets to the sidebar.
