In a new video, The Quantified Scientist’s Rob ter Horst compares the new AApple Watch Series 12Polar H10 ECG chest strap heart rate sensor. This is what he found.
Improved heart rate sensor
for Apple Watch Series 12Apple has completely updated the device’s heart rate sensor, which now measures the heart rate every five seconds even when the user is inactive.
In our review Apple Watch Series 12As you can read here, we found that additional data can provide a more detailed understanding of how daily activities and times throughout the day affect heart rate, such as going grocery shopping, doing yard work, drinking afternoon coffee, or dealing with stressful times at work.
That said, Rob ter Horst from The Quantified Scientist YouTube channel has published an in-depth look (via MacMagazine) that Apple Watch Series 12A new heart rate sensor during indoor cycling, running, and weight lifting, and compares its readings with those from the Polar H10 ECG chest strap.
All in all, yes Apple Watch Series 12The new heart rate sensor performs very well, especially during indoor cycling, where its readings are almost identical to the data of the Polar H10.
During the running session, the Series 12 Still performing well, with a 0.98 correlation with the chest strap (compared to a near-perfect correlation of 1.0 during indoor cycling), although ter Horst noticed some slight deviations at higher heart rates.
During weight lifting, which Horst records is traditionally one of the most difficult activities for wrist heart rate sensors, the. Series 12 Post the lowest correlation of the three exercises tested, at 0.97. Even so, ter Horst said the results were “good” compared to the competition, placing the 12-pack above 85% of the equipment he tested for weightlifting.
Compared to his long-term test of the Apple Watch Series 11, ter Horst said the new Apple Watch Series 12 Provides broadly similar heart rate accuracy, with the older model performing slightly better during his test runs. It may be the case, ter Horst noted, that Apple is also adjusting its algorithms for the new sensor.
Finally, ter Horst also tested Apple Watch Series 12Level counter. He manually calculated about 5,000 steps and found that the Series 12 was generally spotty or just slightly overcounted.
