This DIY project turns your spare Raspberry Pi and monitor into a wall calendar

Resume

  • WallCalToDo uses a Raspberry Pi 3B+ (or newer) and a secondary monitor as a wall-mounted calendar and task display.

  • Syncs with Google Calendar and Microsoft To-Do applications; mirror changes in real time from your phone.

  • Includes a plugin to manage accounts, change settings, enable privacy mode, and is open source on GitHub.

One of the best parts about the security community is that they’re always coming up with ways to turn spare hardware into something cool. If you’ve got a Raspberry Pi 3B or better and you’ve got a secondary monitor running (90% of developers do), someone has figured out a way to turn the two into a wall-mounted digital calendar.

It even syncs with big apps

Check out the images above if you’re interested. They come from Kevin Clayland in a post to the Raspberry Pi subreddit where he showed off his newest project, WallCalToDo (the thread name doesn’t have the L from “Wall” but the GitHub repo does). As the name suggests, it’s a wall calendar that helps you keep your to-do list looking more useful than your hardware gathering dust.

The best thing about WallCalToDo is that it works with some popular calendar apps. Right now it works with Google Calendar and Microsoft To-Do, with more account types. KevinClayland says that if you use the same service on your phone, WallCalToDo will show any changes you’ve made on your device, making it perfect for displaying existing reminders and to-do lists.

Speaking of apps, WallCalToDo has its own companion app. You can use it to manage accounts, change how your calendar works, and even put it in a special “privacy mode” if you have guests over and don’t want them on your schedule. go to WallCalToDo GitHub repo if you want to make your own.
