A new Apple Watch feature listens to your conversations and summarizes them

At its Surprise and Shine event on Wednesday, Apple unveiled a meeting recorder for the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, one of the new audio features that lets you listen to audio through your Apple Watch.

The feature, called Siri Recap, uses ambient listening to record a high level of your conversation, according to the company. Apple Intelligence automatically generates topics, summaries, and key points from conversations, which can then be reviewed in the Siri app.

Apple says you can choose to keep this feature always on, set a schedule, or turn it off completely.

The recorder isn’t the only audio-focused feature introduced for the watch during events. Apple’s new audio feature also includes Shazam, which can instantly identify songs. This means that Apple has caught up with Google’s Now Playing feature. The watch can recognize loud sounds such as sirens, alarm clocks, doorbells, or children crying and alert the user.

Apple also introduced a feature called Live Rewind, which allows users to recap 15 seconds of a conversation when they press the Digital Crown button twice.

Apple emphasizes that the feature does not store recordings and raw audio is not accessible. The Siri Recap feature does not identify the speaker. Users can access Live Rewind recaps, which are end-to-end encrypted. Despite these guardrails, the Always Listening feature may raise privacy concerns because Siri Recap may still collect sensitive information in its summary.

Aside from some privacy features, Siri Recap also sounds similar to other recorders like Granola and Circleback, which also have an Apple Watch app.
