TL; DR
- ChatGPT now lets you virtually try on clothes with a selfie or full-body photo powered by ChatGPT Images 2.5.
- You can also upload clothing links or clothing photos, ask ChatGPT to find similar products, and use those recommendations virtually.
- OpenAI also adds Favorites and folders for saved products, and reference photos can be reused for future tests or deleted from settings.
ChatGPT went mainstream in April of last year, and while the AI tool’s purchase recommendations aren’t always entirely reliable, OpenAI isn’t giving up, despite recent reports of it appearing on fake stores and fake store shelves. It continues to evolve ChatGPT’s shopping capabilities, with the latest addition borrowing a page directly from Google’s Shopping specialties.
ChatGPT now lets you actually try on the clothes and see if they suit you and your body type. This comes shortly after the AI giant made its decision to turn from its Instant Checkout feature.
The new feature is paired with the option to save your favorite products to a Favorites list or special folder. The two new features are both available in Canada, on mobile and on the web, so I expect they will be widely available in the US as well.
Virtually trying on clothes is easy with ChatGPT. When the AI opens the clothing page, for example when you ask it for recommendations, it has an “Apply” button next to it. Tapping the button for the first time will highlight a pop-up window that will offer you to take a selfie or choose one from the gallery. You will then be asked to upload a full body image. Using the ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, the AI tool shows what that outfit might look like on you.
The new model reproduces natural lighting, rich textures and preserves object details better (compared to previous models), making virtual test results more realistic.
You’re not limited to what ChatGPT has to offer. I was able to share a link to the coat and the tool showed that it looked like mine. I also shared a photo of an outfit I liked and asked ChatGPT to find similar products for purchase and the tool gave me both. I think this is the main strength of this new feature. This is no ordinary AI locker room. Instead, it helps you track styles, share shoppable options, and show you what those deals look like on you.
As with any AI tool, mistakes are possible. Virtual try-on images may not accurately represent the product or appearance, and they cannot tell if the actual size will actually fit well. “Please check the seller’s dimensions, product details and return policy before purchasing,” says OpenAI’s support page for the new feature. If you decide to buy something offered by ChatGPT, it’s a good idea to check who you’re buying from.
Of course, there is a privacy angle. The reference photos you share will be saved so ChatGPT can do more tests for you later. You can remove them by going to the app Parameters > Personalization > Reference photos.
