iOS 27 adds four new ways to customize your iPhone lock screen

iOS 27 continues Apple’s trend of giving you more control over the design of your iPhone’s lock screen. This year, there are new customization options, wallpaper settings, and more.

Expand the background image

iOS 27 brings a new Apple Intelligence editing feature to the Photos app. This includes an updated version of Clean Up, as well as Reframe. Another new option is Extend, which intelligently expands your image so you can adjust its aspect ratio, straighten the border, or simply add more space to the edges.

As seen above, the Extend feature is also coming to the lock screen in iOS 27. If the image doesn’t match your iPhone’s aspect ratio or isn’t cropped to fit the wallpaper, iOS 27 will automatically suggest using Extend to fix it.

Extend uses AI to create additional image content around the edges, so you have more flexibility when setting images as iPhone wallpaper.

Create your own wallpaper

iOS 27 brings big improvements to Image Playground, Apple’s app that lets you create images using artificial intelligence. Changing the Playground image also comes to the Lock screen of your iPhone. Now, you can create a wallpaper using Image Playground right from the wallpaper option in settings or on the lock screen itself.

In the wallpaper options, you’ll see a new “Playground” option. The feature creates stylized images from your photo gallery, such as “Retro Sketches” and “Animations.”

You can also create custom wallpapers from scratch just by describing what you want in natural language.

Move the clock

iOS 27 finally allows you to turn down the clock on the iPhone’s lock screen. While Apple has let you customize the size of the watch for years, iOS 27 goes one step further. Now, you can move your lock screen clock to the top row of widgets.

This frees up space on your lock screen so you can see more of your wallpaper. It, of course, comes at the cost of being able to glance at time from afar. For many people, though, the point of the Lock screen is to show the wallpaper, and iOS 27 makes it easier.

With iOS 27, you can now swipe out the Now Playing widget that appears on your iPhone’s lock screen. Even if you clear the Now Playing widget, whatever you’re listening to will continue to play.

This is great if you find yourself accidentally tapping the Now Playing widget on your Lock screen.
