Netflix viewers will see Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison star in the new series

Video streaming platform Netflix has released a trailer for its eight-episode series about the lead-up to the fall of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, focusing on former CEO Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried and his colleague and girlfriend, Caroline Ellison, who headed the company’s sister research arm.

Thursday on X Post, Netflix showed Footage from the upcoming series released on November 19 “about the disgraced prodigy of love behind the FTX scandal.” The series, starring Anthony Boyle as Bankman-Fried and Julia Garner as Ellison, focused on the idea that “the best strategy every time is the best strategy mathematically,” possibly referring to high-risk investments in crypto exchanges using user funds.

“Lying is not bad for a good cause,” says Garner as Ellison in the trailer. The line echoes Ellison’s testimony at Bankman-Fried’s 2023 criminal trial, when he said he believed the rules against lying and stealing did not apply to effective altruism. The philosophy emphasizes doing the most good possible, including “earning to give”, the practice of accumulating wealth to donate to charity.

Bankman-Fried, Ellison and others involved in FTX and Alameda were indicted in December 2022 following the exchange’s collapse and bankruptcy. Ellison took a plea deal and testified against the SBF at trial, while Bankman-Fried chose to go to trial.

He was convicted of seven felony counts related to fraud and sentenced to 25 years in prison. As of October, Bankman-Fried had pending a request for a presidential pardon from Donald Trump and her conviction by the US Supreme Court. Ellison was released from federal custody in January.
