TL; DR
- Qualcomm shares that Snapdragon X series laptops will get Linux support.
- Debian compatibility should be released later in 2026.
- Ubuntu plans to support Snapdragon X2 devices early next year.
It’s taken a few decades, but there’s something big about how we do computing on laptops. After years of trying to be small desktop PCs, laptops powered by the same chips that were never designed to be more power efficient are now widely adopting RISC computing, including models built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips like the X series. At Qualcomm’s annual Snapdragon Summit this week, the company is sharing news of a big new update for models that power users really love.
As part of today’s PC keynote, Qualcomm says Linux is starting to become available on Snapdragon laptops. We are launching Debian support, which will arrive by the end of the year.
By 2027, Linux compatibility will only expand further, with Snapdragon X2-based devices preparing to work with Ubuntu at the beginning of the year. Specifically, we hear that ASUS is targeting Ubuntu availability with its Snapdragon X2 hardware by the halfway point of the year.
Of course, Linux still feels like a platform for most of us serious PC enthusiasts, but many distros are making strides when it comes to usability, and especially when we pair it with this great new laptop hardware, we can see how we’re getting closer to a place where there are fewer and fewer reasons. not To try Linux.
