Since the unveiling of the iPhone Duo, the idea of all the major interface navigation elements being accessible from your thumb has been very interesting. Apple reinvented the concept of smartphone navigation with the iPhone Duo’s external display, and now it feels wrong to put every smartphone on top.
Everyone longs for the days when phones were smaller, mainly because things were more accessible. Its downside is that, well, your screen is relatively small, and the content landscape has evolved from that.
The iPhone Duo solves both of these problems by providing a fairly large rectangular viewing area to the left of the dock and a navigation area to the right. You still get a large viewing area, and you still have everything within the thumb.
Since Apple showed this off, many enthusiasts have brought up the idea of ”iPhone Solo”, such as a display the size of the iPhone Duo, except it cannot be folded.
While I doubt Apple will offer this, I think it’s an interesting idea, and maybe one day it could make sense depending on how well the iPhone Duo does. If you think about it, the current form of smartphones is a story. We have a 16:9 display, then we decided to cut out all the sidebars and the home button, which makes the phone this weird high-end device that’s really inaccessible.
The iPhone Duo rethinks what a smartphone should look like. Apple doesn’t just slap regular iOS on an external display and call it a day. They thought again to make it the best, and now I envy the fact that my phone is so high.
We will see what happens. An iPhone Solo could easily happen if people get the Duo’s external screen well.
